Medicare Advantage plans are provided by private insurance companies with a contract from Medicare. These plans are not Medicare Supplement or Medigap plans.

Medicare Advantage Plans are a very good option for many since they usually offer lower copays than Original Medicare, additional services not offered by Original Medicare and many will even include Part D coverage. These plans are available for a low or $0 monthly premium (you will still continue to part your part b premium).

ANNUAL ELECTION PERIOD (AEP) IMPORTANT

Anyone with Medicare can change plans by enrolling, disenrolling, or switching during the annual election period (AEP).

Beginning in 2011, the annual election period for BOTH drug plans and Medicare Advantage (MA) Plans is October 15 - December 7, of each year. If you join, switch, or disenroll from a plan during the annual election period, the change will be effective on January 1 of the following year.

You have one election per enrollment period. Once the enrollment becomes effective on January 1, the election has been used

One option for a Medicare Advantage plan is an HMO (health maintenance organization. These plans require you to have a primary care doctor and use ONLY in network providers. Great option if all of your providers are in the network since these plans usually have low co-pays and robust benefits.

Most insurance companies have stopped offering PFFS plans for a variety of reasons. United Healthcare offers these plans in a few select areas. The most sensible replacement is a PPO plan which willl allow you to choose between network or even non-network providers.
Anthem Blue Cross has an excellent PPO option in some areas. Click Here To Compare
